‘Matigas’ na crackdown vs substandard rebars giit ng steel industry

HINILING ng Philippine Iron and Steel Institute (PISI) ang mahigpit na pag­subaybay at pagpataw ng karampatang parusa ang manufacturers at resellers ng substandard steel products.

Ito ay makaraang matuklasan ng mga awtoridad ang under­sized reinforced steel bars sa ilang hardware stores sa Nueva Ecija at Pampanga.

Nakapaloob sa dokumento ng Bureau of Product Standards (BPS)  na ang substandard rebars ay mula sa  Philippine Koktai Metal and Real Steel Corporation.

“It is crucial that we rein in the proliferation of inferior steel products in the country especially as the construction sector goes through a slump because of the coronavirus pandemic,” ani PISI president Roberto Cola.

Ayon kay Cola, ang ganitong uri ng gawaiin ang pumapatay sa in­dus­triya ng bakal dahil sa pagkalat ng substandard steel products.

“Some manufacturers and traders are taking advantage of quarantine restrictions and taking shortcuts that ultimately will harm the end-user,” giit ni  Cola.

Gayonman, tiniyak ng industriya ng bakal na magsasagawa sila ng ‘test buys’ sa mga lugar na may nagbebenta ng substandard rebars upang maproteksiyonan ang publiko at maipadala sa BPS ang mga sample nito.

Nabatid na noong Hunyo, sa lalawigan ng Pampanga at Nueva Ecija ginawa ang ‘test buys’ at ipinadala ng BPS sa government testing laboratory at Metals Industry Research and Development Center ang mga sample.

Lumitaw sa pag­susu­ri na bagsak sa standards on mass variation and deformation require­ment ng Philippine National Standards (PNS) ang steel rebars na sinasabing ginawa umano ng Philippine Kotain Metal and Real Steel Corporation.

Dahil dito, posibleng manganib ang buhay ng mga taong gumamit ng substandard na bakal kapag may dumating na kalamidad.

“Low mass variation is like asking someone to pay for 1 kilo of steel and only getting 900g,” diin Cola.

Kaya’t iginiit ni Cola, kailangang magsampa ng reklamo ang mga consumer laban sa mga manufacturer at retailer na nagbebenta ng sub­standard rebars upang masawata ang nasabing ilegal na gawain.
