PINATIBAY ni Grandmaster elect at International Master Daniel Maravilla Quizon ang kanyang posisyon bilang isa sa mga nangungunang chess player ng Filipinas nang pamunuan niya ang Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) Tour of Champions Grandfinals sa Greenhills Mall sa San Juan City nitong Linggo.
Nadaig ng Dasmariñas City, Cavite top player si FIDE Master Ellan Asuela sa blitz at rapid play sa finals para makuha ang P80,000 cash prize at magkampeon sa 12-man field na inorganisa ng PCAP at pinahintulutan ng Games and Amusement Board.
“I’m very happy to win again, especially in a major tournament like this,” ani Quizon na suportado ang kampanya nina mayor Jenny Barzaga, councilor Kiko Barzaga at national coach FIDE Master Roel Abelgas.
“I would like to thank mayor Jenny Barzaga, councilor Kiko Barzaga and national coach FIDE Master Roel Abelgas for supporting my participation in the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) Tour of Champions Grandfinals,” dagdag ni Quizon na sariwa pa sa pagkakampeon sa 2nd Gov. Henry S. Oaminal Open Rapid Chess Tournament na ginanap sa AYA Hotel and Residences sa Clarin, Misamis Occidental nitong 10 Hulyo.
Kinakailangan ni Quizon na mapataas ang kanyang standard rating sa 2460 tungo sa 2500 para makompleto ang GM title status.
Tinalo rin ni Quizon si 13-time Philippine Open Champion Grandmaster Rogelio “Joey” Antonio, Jr., sa blitz at rapid play sa semis.
Samantala, namayagpag si Asuela kay Kevin Arquero sa final four matchups.
Sina Quizon at Asuela ay nakapasok sa semis matapos manguna sa preliminary round.
Sina Antonio, Jr. at Arquero ay nakapasok sa semifinals matapos talunin ang kani-kanilang katunggali.
Tinalo ni Antonio si International Master Chito Garma habang wagi si Arquero na ginulat si FIDE Master Austin Jacob Literatus sa Quarter-finals.
Sa battle for third ay panalo si Antonio laban kay Arquero.
Natangap ni Asuela ang P30,000, nakamit ni Antonio ang P20,000, at nag-uwi sina Arquero, Literatus, at Garma ng tig P5,000.
Ang iba pang notable woodpushers na lumahok sa torneo ay sina IM Kim Steven Yap, IM Joel Banawa, Mark Kevin Labog, Virgen Gil Ruaya, John Philip Gabuco, at Omar Bagalacsa.
Mismong sina PCAP Founder/Commissioner Atty. Paul Elauria, PCAP Chairman Michael Angelo Ong Chua, Monique Castaneda (Marketing of AVP-Head of Marketing of Ortigas Malls), Sheila Marie Perez (Associate Marketing Manager of Ortigas Malls) and Tournament Director Coach Hubert Estrella, at Sportsman Jessie Villasin ang nanguna sa closing rites.
