Nakalikom si Fernandez ng 6.0 points mula five wins at one loss para tumapos ng first runner-up sa likod ng nagkampeon na si UAE’s Fide Master Ammar Sedrani na nakapagkamada ng 6.5 points.
Si Fernandez na frontliner sa Saudi German Hospital sa UAE ay tinulungan din ang Philippines/Novelty chess team na nasa gabay ni sportsman Sonsea Agonoy sa runner-up finish kasama ang kanyang team mate at kababayang si Nelman Lagutin sa 28th Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival – Communities Tournament nitong 20 Agosto.
Si Fernandez, dating Maynilad top chess player ay gumawa ng malaking upset sa 2 by 2 team event matapos maka-draw kay International Master Ali Sebbar ng Egypt sa fourth round, giniba si Grandmaster Bassem Amin ng Egypt sa sixth round at binigo si Fide Master Hilwani Talal ng Syria sa seventh at final round.
