Technology and Resilience Take Center Stage in DOST 9 RSTW

The Department of Science and Technology (DOST), in collaboration with Western Mindanao State University (WMSU), inaugurated the 2024 Regional Science and Technology Week (RSTW) in the Zamboanga Peninsula (ZamPen) today. The event, themed “Siyensya, Teknolohiya at Inobasyon: Kabalikat sa Matatag, Maginhawa at Panatag na Kinabukasan,” highlights the transformative impact of science, technology, and innovation (STI) in fostering inclusive growth and national resilience.

DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr., in his keynote address, emphasized the enthusiasm of ZamPen communities in embracing DOST programs. “From educational initiatives and technology adoption to agricultural advancements and disaster resilience efforts, the people of Zamboanga Peninsula have wholeheartedly embraced these opportunities,” Secretary Solidum said.

The celebration, which runs from November 20–22, 2024, is a dynamic showcase of innovations and partnerships that drive regional development. It features cutting-edge technology exhibits, interactive demonstrations, and expert-led forums on emerging trends in science and technology.

ZamPen has become the first region in the Philippines to complete all modules of the Rapid Earthquake Damage Assessment System (REDAS). This accomplishment underscores the region’s commitment to disaster preparedness, empowering communities with tools to assess and respond to seismic risks.

DOST-IX’s initiatives under the Small Enterprise Technology Upgrading Program (SETUP) have propelled 573 projects, generating jobs and fostering economic growth. Similarly, the Community Empowerment through Science and Technology (CEST) program has implemented 40 impactful projects, while partnerships with five local government units under the iSTART program further advance regional development.

The launch of the Metals and Engineering Innovation Center (MEIC) marks another milestone for the region. Positioned as a hub of innovation, the MEIC provides tailored solutions to strengthen micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). “MSMEs drive innovation, create jobs, and spur economic growth,” said Secretary Solidum. “Through partnerships between academia, government, and industry, we unlock the full potential of our regions.”

DOST-IX Regional Director Martin Wee highlighted the broader vision of the event: “These initiatives represent our commitment to advancing STI for the benefit of communities, industries, and individuals. Their true value lies in the positive change they bring.”

The 2024 RSTW in ZamPen serves as a testament to DOST’s steadfast dedication to fostering innovation and resilience across the nation, setting a benchmark for regional development and national progress. (NELSON SANTOS)
