Kilalanin natin ang ‘Hari ng Buwaya’

NAGMAMAY-ARI siya ng hindi lamang isang buwaya kundi literal na isang batalyon ng mababangis na hayop!

Habang dinodomina ng Wilcon Depot ni William Belo ang merkado ng home-improvement dito sa bansa, tinatahak na niya ang daan patungo sa tagumpay nang magdesisyon siyang subukan ang ibang pagkakaabalahan.

Sinimulan ni Belo ang isang egg farm noong 1989 bilang weekend activity saka napagalamang kakailanganin niyang makaisip ng paraan para matugunan ang problema niya sa mga manok na hindi na nangingitlog.

Kaya sa kalagitnaan ng 1990s, naisip niyang ipakain  sa mga tigre bago napiling i-dispose sa mga buwaya.

Bumili siya ng 1,200 piraso ng mga buwaya sa loob ng tatlong taon matapos malamang nais ibenta ng isang crocodile conservation farm sa Palawan ang kanilang stock ng mga buwaya.

“My plan was just to have a farm with a small number of animals and fresh eggs for personal consumption. One thing led to another. We brought in crocodiles to feed the chickens we didn’t need.”

Sa kasalukuyan, ang tinaguriang ‘Crocodile King’ ng Filipinas ay nagbi-breed ng buwaya at nagmamay-ari sa mahigit 23,000 semi-aquatic reptile, na sa ngayo’y pinagkakakitaan niya rin nang malaki.

Ang balat n ito’y isinu-supply niya sa mga luxury brand tulad ng LVMH, at ang karne nama’y nagagawang iba’t ibang food products,  kabilang ang Hungarian sausage at popular na sisig.

Ibinebenta ang mga food product sa ilalim ng tatak na Dundee, bilang paggunita sa pelikula noong 1986 na Crocodile Dundee.

Sa ngayon, mayroong dalawang crocodile farm si Belo, isa para sa pagbi-breed sa 10 ektaryang lupain  at ang isa pa na pitong beses na mas malaki, para sa culling at pangangasiwa ng animal waste.

Ang nasabing venture ay ipinagmamalaki ang 800,000 manok at 5,000 baboy, at bumebenta si Belo ng aabot sa 2,000 hanggang 3,000 balat ng buwaya kada taon mula sa halagang US$200 hanggang US$250 bawat piraso.

“It’s hard to turn this into a larger scale because food can be very expensive and there are issues of in-breeding which affect the quality of the skin,” he enthused.

“You aren’t allowed to bring in crocodiles from other countries to fix in-breeding and there are few left in the wild,” he added.
