Aresto vs Chinese navy sa Benham Rise iniutos

UMALMA ang Palasyo sa presensiya ng mga survey vessel ng China sa Benham Rise, isla sa Northern Luzon, na pagmamay-ari ng Filipinas.

Sinabi ni Presidential Spokesman Ernesto Abella, ipinabatid ng Department of National Defense (DND) sa Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) ang isyu, upang panindigan ang soberanya ng Filipinas sa mga teritoryo ng bansa.

“We are concerned about the presence of a Chinese ship in Benham Rise, which has been recognized by the United Nations as part of the Philippines.The Department of National Defense has already notified the Department of Foreign Affairs regarding this matter as we continue to assert our sovereignty over our territory,” ani Abella.

Napaulat, inutusan kamakalawa ni Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana ang Philippine Navy na magpadala ng barko sa Benham Rise, upang itaboy ang Chinese survey vessels na nakaistambay sa erya.

“I have ordered the navy that if they see [these] service ship[s] this year, to start to accost them and drive them away from Benham Rise. The very concerning thing is they have several service ships plying this area, staying in one area sometimes for a month as if doing nothing. But we believe they are actually surveying the seabed,” aniya.

Inaprubahan ng Uni-ted Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf, na pagmamay-ari ng Filipinas ang Benham Rise noong 2012.

Noong Pebrero 2016, naalarma ang Filipinas, South Korea at Japan, sa plano ng Beijing na magsagawa ng undersea exploration sa Benham Rise, kasabay nang pagkakatuklas ng US sa tangka ng China na magtayo ng mga estruktura sa Scarborough Shoal .

“The Americans, I think, told the Chinese not to do it and for some reason the Chinese stopped,” ani Lorenzana.

Noong Agosto 2016, pinaimbestigahan ni Pa-ngulong Rodrigo Duterte ang ulat na tinulungan ni dating Zambales Gov. Hermogenes Ebdane ang China para matambakan ng lupa upang maangkin ang Panatag  (Scarborough) Shoal, na sakop ng Masinloc, Zambales, at bahagi ng West Philippine Sea (WPS).

Ngunit mula noon ay wala nang balita kung itinuloy o ano ang naging resulta ng imbestigasyon ni Environment Secretary Gina Lopez sa isiniwalat ni Zambales Governor Amor Deloso, na pinayagan ni Ebdane na magbenta sa China ng lupa at malalaking bato mula sa tatlong bundok ng lalawigan, na ginagamit sa reclamation projects nito sa Panatag Shoal.
