Maynila: Most Expensive City sa Southeast Asia

MANILA — Kahit nangunguna ang Singapore sa mga kapitbansang ukol sa ekonomiya at yaman, inihayag ng online data aggregator na iPrice sa isang pahayag na “sadyang nakagugulat na ang kabisera ng isang developing country tulad ng Maynila — nahuhuli sa economic development kung ihahambing sa binansagang Lion City — ay pumangalawa sa pinakamataas na presyo ng pagrenta sa rehiyon.”
 
Tinukoy ng iPrice group ang Maynila bilang pangatlo sa ‘most expensive city’ sa anim na bansa sa Southeast Asia sa kabila na ito’y may mababang average salary.
 
Nanguna rito ang Singapore sa napatalang P119,732 daily cost of living; pangalawa ang Bangkok, sa P51,517; ikaapat ang Jakarta sa P41,026; pang-lima ang Ho Chi Minh, P39,608 at pang-anim ang Kula Lumpur, P38,314.
 
Halimbawa, ang presyo ng isang one-bedroom apartment sa business center ng Maynila ay 56 porsiyentong mas mataas kaysa Kuala Lumpur, 47 porsiyentong mas mataas sa Jakarta at 31 porsiyentong mas mataas sa Ho Chi Minh, at namangha pa nga ang iPrice na mas mataas ng 9 porsiyento sa Bangkok na isang tourism hotspot sa Southeast Asia.
 
Idinagdag ng grupo, kahit ang cost of living sa Singapore ay nasa 132 porsiyentong mas mataas sa ibang merkado, napansing ang Bangkok at Maynila ay “shockingly” neck-and-neck sa pataasan sa napatalang cost of living na umabot sa P51,500 para sa isang indibiduwal at isang porsiyentong bawas lang sa Maynila sa P50,800 sa bawat indibiduwal.
Napansin ng iPrice researchers ang cost of living sa Maynila ay napatalang 33 porsiyentong mas mataas kaysa Kuala Lumpur, 28 porsiyentong mas mataas sa Ho Chi Minh, at 24 porsiyentong higit sa Jakarta.
 
“These numbers will leave people scratching their heads because Numbeo records Manila to have the lowest estimated average net salary among the other cities,” punto ng data aggregator.
 
“Given the prices stated above, it leaves us wondering how comfortable Filipinos residing in Manila really are. The average cost of living is 168 percent higher than the average salary, so it comes as no surprise that about 35 percent of Metro Manila’s population is reported to live in unstable, badly constructed shelters in the slums and 11 percent of them reside near railroads or garbage dumps,” sabi ng Malaysian-based group.
