P125-M smuggled rice nasabat ng Customs

NASABAT ng mga ahente ng Bureau of Customs (BoC) ang P125 milyong halaga ng smuggled rice sa Manila International Container Port (MICP) nitong Lunes.

Ang 50,000 sako ng bigas ay mula sa Thailand at iprinoseso ng customs broker na si Diosdado Santiago. Dumating ito sa bansa noong 14 Hunyo nang walang kaukulang import permit mula sa National Food Authority (NFA), ayon kay BoC Commissioner Isidro Lapeña.

Ang kargamento ay naka-consign sa Sta. Rosa Farm Products Corp., ang rice importer na may nakabinbing kaso sa Department of Justice dahil sa umano’y pag-import ng 200 container van ng bigas nang walang kaukulang dokumento, ayon kay Lapeña.

Susuriin ng NFA ang kompiskadong bigas upang mabatid kung ito ay ligtas kainin.

“Once the NFA is done with the examination and has issued report and recommendation as to the price, we will auction the goods immediately because of its perishable nature. The proceeds of the auction will be held in escrow pending final reso­­lution of seizure and aban­donment pro­ceedings,” ayon kay Lapeña.
