How to Get UMID ID (Step by Step / Requirements)

These days, integration into a single system is a trend. Plenty of websites for example, include single sign-in or sign-up processes via Facebook integration or Google. By the same token, the Philippine government has essentially attempted to integrate a member’s SSS, GSIS, Pag-Ibig, and PhilHealth information onto a single card in the form of the UMID ID. Here’s how to get a UMID ID in the Philippines.

What is a UMID ID?

UMID means Unified Multi-purpose Identification and often called UMID Card. The Unified Multi-Purpose ID (UMID) is a four-in-one identification card that Filipinos can use to transact with government agencies such as the Social Security System (SSS), Government Service Insurance System (GSIS), PhilHealth, and Pag-IBIG Fund.

The UMID is also accepted as a valid ID in most transactions, making it one of the most powerful IDs in the Philippines. But unlike getting a passport, a UMID card application is quite simpler and easier even for fresh college graduates who are starting out in their first job.

Want to know how to get your UMID ID? Here are the important things to keep in mind before you start with your UMID card application.

1. You Have to Apply Personally

UMID Card Application Guide – Tip #1: You Have to Do It Personally

To date, no word yet if there will be a UMID online registration process. Proxies or representatives aren’t allowed, either. You have to apply personally at any SSS or GSIS office, which could be a hassle for Filipinos with hectic schedules. However, it makes a lot of sense because the government has to confirm your identity and make sure that only one card is issued to you. You need to be there to have your photo, digital signature, and fingerprints taken. No other way to do that than you making a personal appearance for your UMID ID registration.

2. Make Sure You Meet All UMID ID Requirements

UMID cards are free of charge for first-time applicants who meet these criteria:

  • No existing SSS ID or UMID card
  • Paid at least one-month SSS contribution
  • A valid date of coverage (the date you started as an active member per SSS records)

Those who want to change or have lost their old SSS ID will have to pay a replacement fee of PHP 200 directly to the SSS branch where they’ll apply for a UMID card.

Required Documents for SSS members:

  • Accomplished SSS UMID card application form
  • Original or certified true copy of any of the following: passport, driver’s license, Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) card, or Seaman’s Book.
  • If you don’t have any of these IDs, you may present an ATM card with your name, bank account passbook, or birth/baptismal certificate. For other secondary ID cards and documents, visit the SSS website.

Required Documents for GSIS members:

  • GSIS UMID-eCard enrollment form
  • Two valid government-issued IDs (e.g., passport, voter’s ID, driver’s license, PRC card, etc.)

3. How to Get UMID ID

SSS is the main agency that issues UMID cards to private sector workers, while GSIS processes the UMID applications of government employees. So if you work for a private company, file your UMID card application at an SSS branch. If you work for the government, apply at a GSIS branch.

Here are the steps on how to get a UMID ID card for SSS members and GSIS members:

How to Get UMID ID for SSS members

Step 1: Download and fill out the UMID card application form[1].

Before doing so, read the instructions on the last page of the UMID registration form. There should be no erasures or corrections. When you’re done, double-check the form to ensure you’ve done the following:

  • Filled out all fields correctly.
  • Provided at least one contact detail (phone number or email address.)
  • Provided your permanent address instead of a temporary address.
  • Indicated your preferred SSS-accredited bank for enrolling your UMID as an ATM card.

Step 2: Submit your form and documents to the nearest SSS branch.

However, take note that not all SSS branches have the system to process UMID applications. To know the nearest branch where you can apply for a UMID ID card, check out the complete list of SSS branches with UMID enrollment facilities[2].

Step 3: Have your photo, fingerprint, and signature taken.

After verifying your documents, an SSS representative will ask you to go to the booth where your picture will be taken, your fingerprints scanned, and your digital signature captured.

Step 4: Pay the UMID card fee

If you’re replacing your old SSS ID or updating the information in your UMID card, you’ll have to pay a PHP 200 replacement fee and submit a notarized affidavit of loss (for lost cards only). Payments for UMID card replacement are accepted at SSS partner banks such as EastWest Bank, Land Bank, RCBC, Security Bank, and UnionBank.

If you’re applying for a UMID ID card for the first time, you are not required to pay. New UMID card applications are free of charge.

Step 5: Wait for your card to be delivered.

According to the SSS, applicants may receive their UMID card within 30 days from the date of application. After successful application and data capture, SSS will release your UMID within eight working days. It will then be delivered to your address via Philpost within two weeks (Metro Manila) or four weeks (outside Metro Manila).

Step 6: Activate your UMID ID card.

Activating your UMID card allows you to check the info and other updates about your SSS Salary Loan, SSS benefits, and SSS contributions. You can activate your card at any SSS branch or kiosks in select malls.

How to Get UMID ID for GSIS Members

  1. Download and fill out the UMID-eCard enrollment form[3].
  2. Submit two valid IDs and the accomplished application form to the GSIS staff in the eCard enrollment area.
  3. Wait for a text message from GSIS about where you can claim your UMID card.

4. You Can Check Your UMID ID Card Application Status

Has it been months or a year since you filed your application with the SSS? Don’t wait that long. You can check the status of your UMID ID card in three ways.

How to Verify UMID card status:

  • Send an email inquiry to [email protected]
  • Call the SSS Call Center at 920-6446 to 55
  • Send a private message to the SSS Facebook page

Provide your full name, SSS number, birth date, and application date when verifying your UMID status.

5. You Can Apply for a UMID ATM card

SSS began issuing UMID ATM cards in 2017[4] to make the withdrawal of loans, benefits, and pensions easier. As of date, Unionbank is the only accredited bank to issue these ATM cards.

To enroll for a UMID ATM card, indicate in your UMID registration form your preferred SSS-accredited bank. Once you receive your card, proceed to the following Unionbank branches for your UMID ATM card activation.

  • Baguio
  • Buendia
  • Cebu
  • Davao
  • Diliman
  • Manila
  • Pioneer

UMID Card Application – Beware of UMID Scams

With the long waiting times Filipinos have to endure to receive their UMID card, it can be tempting to accept offers that promise a faster UMID application. Be alert—it’s likely a fraud.

SSS has warned its members about a text scam[5] that offers help in speeding up UMID card applications in exchange for a fee. When you receive such message from an unknown sender, ignore it. Better yet, report the incident to SSS and your mobile network service provider.

Final Thoughts

Figuring out how to get a UMID ID is a straightforward process. It’s the waiting time that will really test your patience. Know everything about the UMID card application to manage your expectations.

However, the long wait can be worth it as soon as you receive your UMID card. Apart from having an additional valid ID, your UMID ID card is helpful when you need to withdraw your SSS benefits or salary loan proceeds.
