Globe intensifies disaster preparedness campaign

Globe Business Continuity Management team visits MMDA Chairman Danilo Lim to discuss support for the upcoming Metro Manila Metrowide Shake Drill

GLOBE Telecom continues to strengthen its #GlobeREADY campaign. The company will join the Metro Manila Metrowide Shake Drill this month, in line with its effort to fortify awareness of business continuity management and build resilience against calamities.

The drill will be led by the Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA), and local government units in coordination with the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

“As a leading telecommunications company we understand the importance of our role before, during, and after disasters. This is why Globe is reinforcing and intensifying its contingency planning and disaster recovery mechanisms to reduce network disruption in times of calamities” said Rizza Maniego-Eala, Chief Finance Officer and Chief Risk Officer at Globe. “We have put in place initiatives that help us stay prepared in case of disruptions to our service.”

This year, Globe will be testing its ability to deploy to MMDA and other local government units its emergency communication solutions to help them manage the impact of a potential 7.2-magnitude earthquake in Metro Manila. This includes support for extended outage like Cell-on-wheels (COW); full mobile cell phone network system called Cellular-on-a-Light-Truck (COLT); fuel cells, alternative to diesel-powered generators; and Generators-on-a-Truck (GOAT).

Additionally, Globe deployed its own portable two-way radio infrastructure, acquired prepaid satellite phones; and recently completed the implementation of its Cell Broadcast System which will be used to release Free Disaster Alerts.

In 2015, Globe joined six telecommunications companies from six countries in the GSMA Humanitarian Connectivity Charter designed to ensure people’s access to communication and information during a crisis in order to minimize loss of life and aid humanitarian response.

Globe has adopted a number of mechanisms of the GSMA Humanitarian Connectivity Charter, including transmittal of free mobile alerts via SMS.

It was also in 2015 when Globe became the first telecommunications company in the Philippines to be re-certified in Business Continuity on an enterprise-wide scale. It also received from the British Standard Institute an ISO 22301: 2012 or the Business Continuity Management System Standard. This recognizes its implementation of best practices on business resiliency based on its efforts to plan, establish, implement, operate, monitor, review, maintain, and continually improve a documented management system.
