TINANGHAL na overall champion ang University of Makati (UMAK) Herons varsity chess team sa katatapos na national chess tournament ng Commission on Higher Education (CHED) Sports Friendship Games 2022 Team na ginanap nitong Hunyo 23 hanggang 25 sa Quezon Memorial CIrcle sa Quezon City.
Pinangunahan ni team captain Japeth Jay Tandoc, ang UMAK Herons team ay giniba ang matindi nilang katunggali mula sa mula sa iba’t ibang eskuwelahan ng Commission on Higher Education matapos ang tatlong araw ng kompetisyon na ipinatupad ang standard time control format of 60 minutes + 16 seconds increment.
Ang iba pang miyembro ng team ay sina Joshua Abrera, Vincent Mariano, Joshua Francisco, Ariel Joven Jereos , Lyle Oliver Nabual at assistant team captain Theresa Saquilayan.
Sa ilalim ng pagtitimon ni coach Clark “CJ” Dela Torre, ang varsity chess team ay nagbigay ng karangalan sa UMAK Herons na suportado nina UMAK OIC President Elyxzur C. Ramos, UMAK Vice President for Student Services and Community Development Prof. Virgilio B. Tabbu, UMAK Director, Athletic Development Center DIR. Dominador B.Lera at Makati City Mayor Mar-len Abigail “Abby” Sombillo Binay-Campos.

Itinala ng UMAK Herons ang importanteng panalo kontra sa Pateros Technological College, 4-0, sa first round; Pangasinan State University, 3.5-0.5, sa second round; Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University, 4-0, sa third round; Tarlac State University, 3-1, sa fourth round; Dr. Yanga’s College Inc., 4-0, sa fifth round; at Technological University of the Philippines, 3.5-0.5, sa sixth at final round.
Kabilang sa ginawaran ng individual gold medal sina Board 1 Jacob Sta. Ana ng Tarlac State University, Board 2 Japeth Kay Tandoc ng University of Makati, Board 3 Vincent Mariano ng University of Makati, Board 4 Joshua Francisco ng University of Makati, Board 5 Rica Alcantara ng Don Mariano Marcos Memorial State University.
Tumayong Tournament Director si National Arbiter Joel Villanueva habang ang Chief Arbiter ay si International Arbiter Patrick Lee. Si Dr. Alfredo Paez naman ang CHED Commissioner in Chess Sports.
