ARESTADO ng mga operatiba ng Bureau of Customs (BoC) ang 17 Chinese national dahil sa umano’y paggawa ng pekeng sigarilyo sa isang warehouse sa Gapan City, Nueva Ecija.
Ayon sa ulat, nakompiska sa operasyon ng BoC noong 17 Agosto ang mga pekeng sigarilyo ng iba’t ibang brands, anim na cigarette-making machines, raw materials para sa sigarilyo, at pekeng Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) tax stamps na nakalagay sa loob ng tatlong kahon.
Ayon kay Enforcement and Security Services (ESS) Director Yogi Ruiz, ang tinatayang market value ng kompiskadong mga sigarilyo, tax stamps at makina ay aabot sa P200 milyon.
Sinabi ni BoC Commissioner Isidro Lapeña, ang warehouse ay isinailalim nila sa tatlong linggong surveillance makaraan makatanggap ng tip mula sa isang reliable source na gumagawa ng pekeng sigarilyo roon.
“We are still conducting follow-up investigation to confirm the identities of the suspects and the origin of the raw materials and cigarette-making machine,” ayon kay Lapeña, idinagdag na ang mga suspek, kabilang ang anim lalaki at isang babae, ay nasa kustodiya na ng mga awtoridad.
“The owner still have 15 days from the date of inspection to produce evidence of payment on the imported items, otherwise, a warrant of seizure and detention will be issued by the Bureau,” dagdag niya.
Ang mga suspek ay mahaharap sa kasong paglabag sa Section 155, 155.1 in relation to Section 170 ng Republic Act No. 8293 o “An Act Prescribing The Intellectual Property Code And Establishing The Intellectual Property Office, Providing For Its Powers And Functions, And For Other Purposes.”
