INIUTOS ni Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte si Defense Sec. Delfin Lorenzana, huwag nang gumawa ng ano mang paghahanda para sa joint military exercises ng Filipinas at Amerika para sa susunod na taon.
Sinabi ni Pangulong Duterte, nais niyang tuluyan nang tuldukan ang military exercises ng dalawang bansa ngunit hindi aniya ito nangangahulugang pinuputol na ang alyansa ng Filipinas sa Estados Unidos.
Ayon sa kay Pangulong Duterte, ito ay dahil hindi madaling ibasura ang ano mang treaty na nilagdaan ng Filipinas.
Ngunit iginiit ng Pangulo, hindi kailangan ang tulong ng US, maging Russia o China sakaling magkaroon ng giyera lalo kapag sumabog na ang mga bomba.
Sa ngayon, binabalangkas na niya ang isang independent foreign policy para matigil na ang pagdepende ng bansa sa foreign assistance at sa dikta ng iba gaya ng US.

Well, I said I am thankful because I insist that we’re re-aligned. That there will be no more exercises next year. Do not prepare, I told Defense Secretary Lorenzana. Do not make preparations for next year’s…I do not want it anymore and I will chart an independent foreign policy. We will not break our alliances—the US–RP, but we need not really, you know, break or abrogate existing treaties because they say that it could provide us with the umbrella,” ayon kay Pangulong Duterte.
