”It was announced that comedienne Aiai delas Alas will be receiving a papal decoration, Et Ecclesiae et Pontifice.
Of all the stories I came across, it seems there were important points that were missed, naturally because it was the secular press, meaning those who do not cover affairs of the church and may not be aware of the decoration.
First, it is not called an award. It is a “decoration”. Traditionally, in the language of the church, recipients of the honor are not called awardees. They are called “condecorado”, meaning decorated.
Aiai was not the first showbiz personality to received such decoration. In 2013 composer Ryan Cayabyab also got the same papal decoration for his liturgical music contributions to the church. Earlier this year, a Pampango sculptor Willy Layug also got the same award, Layug was the subject of a 2013 film Dukit which was included in the new wave division of the MMFF. He was also new wave best actor of the festival that year.
“Considered the highest honor given by the Pope to individuals is the Order of Christ. This is traditionally given only to heads of states who are practicing members of the Catholic Church, and is of exemplary moral status. It is only given in the presence of the Pope.
In 1905, Saint, then Pope Pius X, made this decoration “only to be given by the Pope”. Later on restrictions to the decoration were also instituted by Paul VI.”
