PINANGUNAHAN ni Sen. Cynthia Villar ang pagdiriwang ng anibersaryo ng paglagda sa “Convention on Wetlands of International Importance” sa pama-magitan ng paglilinis sa Las Piñas-Paranaque Critical Habitat and Eco-Tourism Area (LPPCHEA).
“We are taking part in the celebration to raise public awareness on the value of wetlands and to drum up support for the protection and conservation of the six Ramsar-listed wetlands in the country; only one of them can be found in Metro Manila, which is LPPCHEA,” ani Villar.
Ayon kay Villar, ang pagdiriwang ay isang pagkakataon upang makatawag ng atensyon kaugnay ng lumalalang kondisyon ng LPPCHEA dahil sa hindi maayos na waste management kaakibat ng pla-nong reklamasyon sa Manila Bay.
“Aside from my frequent visit in LPPCHEA to do clean up and tree-planting activities, students and re-sidents come here every Friday to pick up the trash. Each time we collect a truck-load of waste materials washed ashore from nearby areas,” sabi pa ni Villar.
Idineklarang “protected area” ang 175-hectare na LPPCHEA na nasa baybayin ng Manila Bay sa bisa ng Presidential Proclamation No. 1412. Ang LPPCHEA ay may 30 ektaryang mangrove forest at bird sanctuary.
