DINAGSA ng mga militanteng organisasyon mula sa iba’t ibang sektor sa pangunguna ng mga estudyante, kasama ang mga guro at iba pang propesyonal, manggagawa, magsasaka, at religious group,
ang paggunita sa ika-54 anibersaryo ng batas militar na ipinataw noong 21 Setyembre 1972 sa pamamagitan ng Proclamation 1081 ni dating Pangulong Ferdinand Marcos, Sr., ama ng kasalukuyang presidente ng bansa.
Sa pamamagitan ng marsta at mga programang kultural, na ginanap sa Liwang Bonifacio sa Maynila at sa iba pang lugar sa mga probinsiya, muling ipinaalala ng mga piling tagapagsalita ang lagim ng batas militar sa buong bansa.
Sa isang pahayag kaugnay ng ika-54 taon ng martial law, sinabi ng Karapatan, isang human rights alliance, ang patuloy na pagsasabuhay ng karapatang tumutol ng mga mamamayan ay isa sa pinakamahalagang aral na dapat isulong mula sa madilim na kahapon ng ‘authoritarian rule’.
Bukod sa paggunita sa madidilim na araw ng paniniil at diktadura, dapat itong magsilbing paalala kung paano nabubuhay ang pamahalaan sa talamak na korupsiyon, mga patakarang laban sa mamamayan, at pagpapatahimik sa mga sumasalungat.
“Martial law taught us that the Filipino people will rise up under a government that silences those who demand accountability for its crimes, and injustice.
This is precisely why the right to protest remains indispensable today, despite attempts to block protests and mass actions that express our collective discontent with the Marcos Jr. regime’s perpetuation of corruption, violations of human rights and international humanitarian law, and tyranny, like his dictator-father,” pahayag ni Karapatan secretary general Cristina Palabay.
Kinondena rin ng Karapatan ang Philippine National Police (PNP) sa ginawang pagsasara ng mga kalsada at iba pang restriksiyon kaugnay ng mga rally at protesta para sa 21 Setyembre, gayundin ang suspensiyon ng klase sa Maynila.
“We do not need permission from those in power to demand accountability. We have the right to question government policies, expose corruption, criticize officials, and take to the streets when our voices are ignored. This right is vital at a time when billions in public funds are being stolen and government accountability remains a pressing concern,” saad pa ni Palabay.
Humugos ang mga protesta nitong Lunes, 21 Setyembre, sa gitna ng galit at sentimiyento ng mga mamamayan laban sa korupsiyong nagaganap sa mga flood-control at infrastructure projects.
“The legacy of martial law remains because the same atrocities continue, more than five decades after. We are taking to the streets to defend people’s rights, as we condemn the State’s utmost neglect of the people’s suffering due to corruption, rabid attacks against the people through red-tagging, unjust arrests, and trumped-up charges, and Marcos Jr.’s sell-out of the Philippines to foreign powers,” ani Palabay.
“Never again, never forget means defending the rights that the dictatorship tried to destroy. It means refusing to be silenced when public funds are plundered, when corruption is exposed, when human rights are violated, and when government power is abused.”
“On this 54th anniversary of Martial Law, we remember, and we resist and fight back,” pagwawakas ni Palabay.
Matapos ang programa sa Liwasang Bonifacio, nagpormasyon ang mga raliyista patungong Mendiola. Bago tuluyang tumulak, nag-chanting muna ang bulto kasama ang lider ng mga progresibong organisasyon.
“The protest in Manila and across the country highlighted the continuing clamor for accountability. No overkill security measures and malicious spreading of fear can stop the people’s demand for truth and justice,” ayon kay Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (BAYAN) secretary general Raymond Palatino.
