Kaso vs journos bawiin, censorship itigil

NANAWAGAN ang AlterMidya Network, national network ng independent media outfits sa Filipinas, sa Philippine National Police at NutriAsia na bawiin ang lahat ng kasong inihain laban sa limang journalist na inaresto habang nagko-cover sa dispersal ng strike ng mga mang­gagawa ng NutriAsia nitong Lunes, 30 Hulyo.

Kasabay nito, kinon­dena ng AlterMidya ang mapangahas na hak­bang ng NutriAsia na i-censor ang mga jour­nalist nang tangkain silang papirmahain sa ‘quit claim’ waiver, na nakasaad na hindi sila magpapalabas ng ano mang balita hinggil sa dispersal, at iba pa, kapalit ng pagbawi sa kasong isinampa laban sa kanila.

Ang AlterMidya correspondents na sina Eric Tandoc at Hiyasmin Saturay, editorial staff na si Avon Ang, at student intern na si Psalty Caluza, kasama ng campus journalist na si Jon Bonifacio, ay iniutos na palayain mula sa pagkakapiit, kasama ng mga manggagawa ng NutriAsia at kanilang mga tagasuporta. Ga­yon­man, ang mga kasong paglabag sa Batas Pam­bansa 880, katulad ng illegal assembly, gayondin ang public alarm and scandal, ay nanatili laban sa limang journalist.

“The filing of such charges against Filipino journalists is unpre­cedented in recent history, utterly baseless, and beyond ridiculous. They must be immediately dropped,” pahayag ng AlterMidya.

Binatikos din ng Al­ter­Midya Network ang management ng Nutri­Asia dahil sa paglabag sa constitutional right para sa freedom of the press dahil sa kanilang tan­g-kang censorship.

“We support plans by lawyers to file counter-charges against the PNP and NutriAsia security guards in behalf of the NutriAsia 19. Our cor­respondent Tandoc was among those beaten up by police and NutriAsia security forces. Video footage shows that Tandoc was clearly shoot­ing with a video camera when he was grabbed and hit with truncheons,” pahayag ng AlterMidya.

Sa video footage na kuha ni Tandoc ay maki­kita ang campus jour­nalist na si Bonifacio habang kinakaladkad ng mga pulis at mga security guard.

“This kind of violence inflicted upon journalists in the course of fulfilling their duties is unac­cep­table and is a travesty of press freedom,” dagdag ng AlterMidya.

Ang camera equip­ment na tinatayang P100,000 ang halaga, at iba pang equipment na kinompiska mula sa nasabing mga journalist ay dapat anilang ibalik.

Anila, ang nangyari sa NutriAsia ay isa lamang sa marami nang beses na pag-atake sa press free­dom sa ilalim ng administrasyong Duterte.

“We are enraged at how state security forces spit on our right to infor­mation. They are embol­dened by the pronounce­ments of President Duter­te and his spokes­persons who consider truth telling as a crime,” anila.

Tiniyak ng Alter­Midya Network na ipag­papatuloy nila ang pag-uulat hinggil sa strike ng mga manggagawa ng NutriAsia nang tapat at walang takot, lalo’t na­bigo anila ang main­stream media na i-cover ang panig ng mga mang­gaga­wa.

“We call on other journalists to exercise truthful and critical reporting on the Nutri­Asia labor dispute, despite advertising interests of their media owners. Now more than ever, the Filipino people, especially the working class, needs journalism that will cut through, and not become an echo chamber of, lies that imperil their interests and their very lives.”

“We call on our colleagues to close our ranks even more to defend journalism and the people’s right to know. We will not let lies and deception prevail. We will fight back because the Filipino people, especially the marginalized, deserve to be heard. It is from them we draw our strength,” ayon sa AlterMidya.

Samantala, nag­papasalamat ang Alter­Midya sa mga sumu­porta sa kanila, sa mga kasamahan sa media sa local at sa abroad, sa mga abogado at iba pa na tumulong para ma­pa­laya ang mga jour­nalist. “We will continue to see to it that the Nutri­Asia 19 achieve justice for their injuries and unjust detention, and additionally for our media personnel, the violation of their right to report and fulfill their duty as journalists,” pagtatapos ng Alter­Midya.
