DOST Strengthens Innovation Ecosystem with PROPEL Program

DOST Strengthens Innovation Ecosystem with PROPEL Program

ILIGAN CITY, LANAO DEL NORTE – THE Department of Science and Technology (DOST) held a zonal conference on March 14, 2025, at the Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT), which highlighted its PROPEL program, with the theme “Accelerating Innovations in the Philippines.”

Led by DOST Secretary Dr. Renato U. Solidum Jr., the event gathered key officials, researchers, and innovators to discuss how PROPEL strengthens the link between scientific breakthroughs and global market opportunities.

Dr. Solidum described PROPEL as a strategic shift beyond research and development, ensuring that science-based solutions reach end-users, transform markets, and create tangible local and global impacts.

The program also fosters interdisciplinary collaboration, bridges gaps between research and industry, and equips Filipino scientists and innovators with entrepreneurial skills to align with international market demands.

More than just funding R&D, PROPEL positions DOST as an active partner in translating innovations into real-world solutions that attract investments and address global challenges.

Dr. Solidum underscored that in an era of rapid technological disruption and economic complexity, nations that effectively harness science, technology, and innovation do not just survive, more importantly, they thrive.

He said that through PROPEL, the Philippines aims to be a key player in the global knowledge economy, leveraging Filipino ingenuity and scientific excellence to drive competitiveness, productivity, and growth.

He added the initiative also reinforces the importance of developing local solutions with global impact, ensuring that Philippine innovations contribute meaningfully to solving the world’s most pressing challenges.

DOST Assistant Secretary Dr. Napoleon K. Juanillo Jr. underscored PROPEL’s role alongside initiatives like the S&T SDG and Pagtanaw 2050 in driving national and economic transformation.

He emphasized the need to aggressively promote Philippine innovations in global markets, reinforcing the country’s leadership in science, technology, and innovation.

“Our vision is clear, that the Philippines is ready to lead, engage, and make a mark in the world,” he said.

MSU-IIT Chancellor Prof. Alizedney M. Ditucalan welcomed the initiative, saying that PROPEL is not just about commercialization but about bringing technologies to communities to improve lives.

A key highlight of the conference was a workshop and keynote session on semiconductors and artificial intelligence, featuring Mr. Glenn Quiro, Technology Advocate of the Apl.de.Ap Foundation International (APLFI) and former General Manager of Intel Shenzhen and Shanghai, alongside Dr. John Anthony Jose, Associate Professor at De La Salle University. Dr. Romela Ratilla, Regional Director of DOST Region X, also participated, emphasizing the critical role of regional science and technology initiatives in advancing innovation and economic development.

Spearheaded by the DOST Office of the Assistant Secretary for Technology Transfer, Communications, and Commercialization, PROPEL consolidates resources to bridge the gap between research and market-ready solutions, positioning Filipino innovations for global competitiveness. (NELSON SANTOS)
