Natural Textile Fiber Innovation Hub Opens in Laguna to Boost Local Textile Industry

A significant step toward strengthening the Philippine textile sector was marked with the launch of the Natural Textile Fiber Innovation Hub (NTFIH) Laguna Facility at Laguna University in Santa Cruz, Laguna.

The newly inaugurated facility aims to address the growing demand for natural textile fibers by converting raw agricultural materials directly from the soil into spinnable textile fibers. This innovation is expected to enhance value-adding processes for local resources while promoting sustainable and community-driven production.

In his welcome remarks, Dr. Charlemagne G. Laviña, President of Laguna University, emphasized the institution’s role in fostering innovation and collaboration. He noted that universities today must go beyond education and take the lead in driving transformative initiatives that benefit both industry and society.

Delivering the opening remarks, Dr. Julius L. Leaño, Jr., Director IV of the DOST–Philippine Textile Research Institute, highlighted the importance of the facility in empowering communities and strengthening the country’s textile value chain. He underscored how the NTFIH Laguna Facility can create opportunities for local producers while contributing to the growth of the Philippine textile industry.

The keynote message was delivered by Dr. Renato U. Solidum, Jr., Secretary of the Department of Science and Technology, who stressed the vital role of science, technology, and innovation in achieving national progress and inclusive development.

Also present at the event, Hon. Benjamin C. Agarao, Jr. underscored the importance of leadership and multi-sectoral partnerships in building a resilient and sustainable local industry. Meanwhile, Ms. Carina F. Macalos reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote innovation and sustainability.

Further emphasizing grassroots impact, Ms. Agnes G. Morales, Provincial Director of DOST–Laguna, highlighted the role of localized innovation in transforming ideas into tangible community benefits.

The establishment of the NTFIH Laguna Facility represents a collaborative effort among academic institutions, government agencies, and local stakeholders. It is expected to serve as a hub for research, development, and capacity-building, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable and globally competitive Philippine textile industry. (Nelson Santos)
